What is a Knot Garden

Knot Gardens originated from the Tudor period (16 th century) and were inspired by English needlework patterns. They are filled with gravel or mulch and the hedges are the feature.

A Parterre (for you interest) originated in the late 16 th /early 17 th century and were inspired from French embroidery patterns. They tend to be larger than knot gardens and the hedges create a series of ornamental flowerbeds.
